Sitemap Inspector

Paste your site root or a sitemap.xml URL. We fetch it, count entries, sample URLs, and flag issues like missing lastmod dates or files exceeding the 50,000-URL limit.

Common questions

Why does my sitemap need lastmod dates?+

lastmod tells search engines when a URL was last modified. Without it, they have to re-crawl everything periodically. With accurate lastmod, they can prioritise checking pages that actually changed — faster indexing of your updates.

What if I have more than 50,000 URLs?+

Use a sitemap index — a top-level sitemap that points to multiple child sitemaps, each containing up to 50,000 URLs. This tool detects whether you've already structured it as an index.

Should I include every URL?+

Only canonical, indexable URLs. Don't list paginated archives, tag pages, or anything you've marked noindex. Also exclude redirects and 404s.

Is this the same as Google Search Console?+

GSC tells you what Google indexed from your sitemap. This tool checks the sitemap itself is well-formed BEFORE Google sees it. Both useful, different jobs.
