5 reasons ChatGPT cannot find your business

ChatGPT has four main sources of information about businesses. If you are not in any of them, ChatGPT does not know you exist.

You are not in Bing's search index

ChatGPT primarily uses Bing to find websites. If Bing has not indexed your site, ChatGPT cannot cite you. This is the most common problem. Check Bing Webmaster Tools to see if your site is indexed.

You do not have a Google Business Profile

Businesses with a Google Business Profile are far more discoverable to ChatGPT. If you have not claimed your GBP, or it is incomplete, ChatGPT will not mention you.

You do not have structured data (schema markup)

Without FAQ, LocalBusiness, or Organization schema, ChatGPT cannot understand what your business does or who it serves. Add schema and your discoverability jumps dramatically.

You are not listed in trusted directories

ChatGPT learns about businesses from Yelp, Trustpilot, industry directories, and niche services (Thumbtack, HomeAdvisor). If you are missing from these, you are less discoverable.

Your content does not directly answer questions

ChatGPT cites pages that clearly answer user questions. If your website is vague, long-winded, or light on facts, ChatGPT will cite your competitor instead.

The easy test

Ask ChatGPT directly

Open ChatGPT and ask: 'What can you tell me about [your business name] in [your city]?' or 'Who are the best [your service] providers near me?' If ChatGPT does not mention you, or gives incorrect information, you know where to start. This 30-second test tells you everything.

5 fixes to get ChatGPT to find your business

1

Claim and optimize your Google Business Profile

Go to Google Business Profile (google.com/business). Search for your business name. Claim the listing if it exists, or create one if it does not. Fill every field: address, hours, phone, website, categories, services, and photos. This is the fastest way to get discovered.

2

Submit your site to Bing Webmaster Tools

Go to Bing Webmaster Tools and add your website. Verify it with your domain registrar or DNS. Submit your XML sitemap. This tells Bing to crawl your site. Bing indexing usually takes 1 to 2 weeks.

3

Add LocalBusiness schema to your homepage

This is code that tells search engines and AI systems exactly who you are. If you use Wix, WordPress, or Squarespace, use their schema plugins. If you have a developer, ask them to add LocalBusiness schema with your business name, address, phone, service area, and rating.

4

Get listed on 5 to 8 trusted directories

Create accounts on Google (done in step 1), Yelp, Trustpilot, and 2 to 4 industry-specific directories. Use the exact same business name and address on all of them. Consistency matters. Update all of them when your info changes.

5

Ask customers to leave reviews

Get at least 10 to 15 reviews on Google and relevant directories. Ask satisfied customers via email or text. Link directly to your Google review page. More reviews = higher trustworthiness to ChatGPT and other AI systems.

Timeline: How long until ChatGPT finds you

Different fixes take different amounts of time. Here is what to expect.

Google Business Profile (1 to 3 days)

Google indexes GBP almost immediately. Once you claim and fill it out, ChatGPT can find basic info about you within 24 to 48 hours.

Bing indexing (1 to 4 weeks)

After submitting to Bing Webmaster Tools, Bing crawls your site. This takes 1 to 2 weeks. Your pages appear in Bing results a few days after that. ChatGPT then starts citing you.

Directory listings (immediate to 2 weeks)

Yelp, Trustpilot, and industry directories are indexed by ChatGPT and other AI almost immediately. If you are already listed on these, ChatGPT likely knows about you already.

Schema markup (1 to 2 weeks)

Once you add schema to your homepage, search engines and AI systems re-crawl your page. They see the schema within 1 to 2 weeks.

Full visibility (2 to 4 weeks)

Combined, these fixes take 2 to 4 weeks. Start with Google Business Profile (fastest) and directories (immediate), then add schema and Bing Webmaster Tools.

The role of each visibility layer

ChatGPT uses multiple sources. You need all of them to be fully discoverable.

Google Business Profile is your foundation

70 percent of business discoveries start here. Complete it fully. Add photos. Respond to reviews. If your GBP is empty, ChatGPT has almost nothing to go on.

Reviews build trust and discoverability

ChatGPT treats reviews as trust signals. Businesses with 4.5+ stars on Google and Yelp rank higher in AI recommendations. Ask customers to review you on Google and Yelp.

Directory listings provide backup discovery

If your website is not indexed yet, ChatGPT can still find you on Yelp or Trustpilot. Being on 5 to 8 directories means ChatGPT knows you exist, no matter what.

Your website content makes you citeable

ChatGPT does not just recommend you. When users ask specific questions, ChatGPT cites your website. Your website needs to directly answer those questions.

Schema markup makes you machine-readable

Schema markup is a language AI understands. Without it, AI has to guess. With it, AI immediately knows your business category, location, hours, and services.

Organic search rankings boost recommendations

If you rank in Google's top 10 for a local query, ChatGPT will recommend you. Ranking on Google and getting found by ChatGPT are connected.

ChatGPT discovery questions

How do I check if ChatGPT knows about my business?+

Open ChatGPT and ask: 'What can you tell me about [your business name]?' or 'Who are the best [your service] providers in [your city]?' If it knows you, it will provide your name, address, and services. If not, you see nothing or incorrect info.

Does Google ranking guarantee ChatGPT visibility?+

Not immediately. ChatGPT uses Bing primarily, not Google. You can rank #1 on Google but not appear in ChatGPT. Rank in both Google and Bing to maximize AI visibility.

How important is Google Business Profile?+

Very. GBP is often the first place ChatGPT learns about your business. It is also free and takes 30 minutes to set up. If you have not claimed yours, start here.

Do I need a website to be found by ChatGPT?+

Not initially. ChatGPT can find you via Google Business Profile and directories alone. But a website with good content and schema markup makes you more visible and more citable.

How many reviews do I need?+

Aim for 15 to 20 minimum. More reviews signal trustworthiness to ChatGPT. Do not pay for reviews (ChatGPT detects fake reviews). Focus on real customer feedback.

What if my business is very new?+

Start with Google Business Profile and directories immediately. Get 5 to 10 customer reviews within the first month. Add schema to your website. Bing indexing takes longer for new sites (2 to 4 weeks), so be patient.

Does moving my website hurt my ChatGPT visibility?+

Possibly, temporarily. When you move sites or change domains, Bing takes time to re-index. Set up 301 redirects from old to new pages. Resubmit to Bing Webmaster Tools. Recovery usually takes 2 to 4 weeks.
