Trust AI recommendations
ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews, and Claude all discover local businesses the same way traditional search engines do. But they have four key sources.
This is the starting point. AI systems scan Google Business Profile data for business name, address, phone, hours, categories, and reviews. A complete, verified GBP is essential.
Yelp, Thumbtack, HomeAdvisor, Trustpilot, and industry-specific directories are trusted sources for AI. If you are listed with consistent info across 5 to 10 directories, AI systems trust you more.
Schema markup (LocalBusiness, Organization, FAQPage) tells AI systems who you are and what you do. Without it, AI has to guess from your content.
If you rank in Google's top 10 for local queries, AI systems take notice. Reviews and ratings signal trust. Higher ratings mean higher likelihood of AI recommendation.
When your business is mentioned on trusted sites (news, associations, local blogs), AI learns your reputation. Being called an 'expert' or 'award-winning' in public sources matters.
AI systems favour recent content. If your website, GBP, and directories are updated regularly, AI treats you as an active business. Stale listings are deprioritised.
The 80/20 rule of AI visibility
You do not need a separate 'AI SEO strategy'. Traditional SEO ranking already puts you in position to be cited by AI. 80 percent of sources ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google AI cite rank in the organic top 10 for that query. If you rank in Google's top 10, you are already visible to AI. The last 20 percent comes from GBP optimization, directories, and schema markup.
Claim and verify your GBP if you have not already. Fill every field: name, address, hours, phone, website, categories, services, products. Add 10+ real photos. Aim for 85 percent+ profile completion.
Go to your website's homepage. Add LocalBusiness schema markup with your business name, address, phone, hours, and service area. This tells AI exactly what your business is and where you operate.
List yourself on Google, Yelp, Trustpilot, and 2 to 4 industry-specific directories (e.g. Thumbtack for services, Jameson for local pros). Use the same business name and address across all. Consistency is a ranking signal.
Ask satisfied customers to leave reviews on Google and relevant directories. Reply to all reviews within 24 hours. Aim for 15+ reviews minimum. Review count and response rate both signal trustworthiness to AI.
Pick your 5 highest-traffic pages. Make sure each one answers a clear question (e.g. 'What does plumbing cost?' or 'How do I book a consultation?'). Write your answer in the first 50 words, then expand. Add FAQ schema if the page has questions.
Different industries appear in different AI systems. Here is how to optimize for your sector.
List on Yelp, Thumbtack, TaskRabbit, and HomeAdvisor. Add schema for LocalBusiness + PriceRange. Write blog posts answering cost questions ('How much does X cost in 2026?'). AI heavily cites service cost pages.
Get listed on Healthgrades, ZocDoc, or your industry directory. Use Organization schema with credentials. Write FAQ content answering common patient questions. Highlight certifications and qualifications.
Get on Google, Yelp, TripAdvisor, and OpenTable. Use Restaurant schema with menu, hours, and reservation info. Update hours and holiday closures immediately. AI cites restaurants with up-to-date operating info.
Build a website that ranks for service keywords. Add Organization schema with team bios. Get mentioned in industry news or local business publications. AI cites recognized, cited experts.
Not really. AI systems cite sources that rank well organically. The main difference is AI also uses Google Business Profile, directories, and schema markup more heavily. Do traditional SEO well and you are 80 percent of the way to AI visibility.
No. Use the same keywords. AI answers the same questions Google does, just in different formats. If you rank for 'emergency plumber near me', you are also visible to ChatGPT for the same query.
2 to 4 weeks if your GBP is set up. 2 to 3 months if you are starting from zero (GBP, directories, schema). AI systems check these sources regularly. The moment you optimize, you move up.
Create a separate GBP for each location. Add them all to your website using LocalBusiness schema (one per location). Use directories that support multi-location management.
A single bad review does not hurt you. But consistent negative reviews or a low overall rating (under 3 stars) reduces AI recommendations. Respond to negative reviews and ask satisfied customers to leave ratings.
Yes. Ask ChatGPT directly: 'What can you tell me about [my business name]?' If it draws a blank or gives incorrect info, your GBP or directories need updating.
